UNDER CONSTRUCTION

   Gagarin,      an      industrial       town founded in 1955 and named after the cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in 1961, is the first settlement reached in Gegharkunik, left of the main Sevan highway.

   Next is  the  city  of  Sevan,  till  1935 Elenovka, named after the wife of Czar Nicholas I, was founded in 1842 by exiled Molokans, Russian schismatics,  and the town remained all Russian till the end of the 19th c. One km N is the cyclopean fortress of Metsep. On a hill just S of the village  of Tsamakaberd    (now   in   the  limits  of

        

Sevan), just E of Sevan city, is a cyclopean fortress.
